Our client’s had settled into their Leyton Victorian terrace, but the kitchen; dark, cold, north-facing, wasn't pulling its weight. With bikes, a dog and a love of cooking together, the house needed to work harder.

Flood the ground floor with light, open the kitchen to the garden and create a proper cooking and dining space, honour the cosy living room they retreated to in the evenings. Reconfigure the first floor, including bathroom to the rear.

A single-storey back and side extension honours the couple’s lifestyle; cocktail station, barista corner, vinyl nook. The glass bifold corner opens the entire kitchen to the garden, dissolving the boundary between in and outdoor hosting. Skylights flood the space with natural light, oak veneer banquette seating and exposed beams ground the decor. The exterior, clad in bespoke, eco-glazed brick slips made from recycled Welsh slate stands out, rather than blend in. Upstairs, a reconfigured bathroom and office complete the picture.
